Thisismyfourthpianoconcerto,andhonestlytheoneIlikethebest.
Theotherthreearemuchslower,andalotlesstechnicalthanthispiece.
PianoConcerto#4hasmuchflashierpianowork,andsomeexcellent
phrasingthatmyotherpianoconcertilack.

Igrewupplayingthepiano,andIamproudtosaythatisnownotonlymy
trueloveinlife,butalsoacareer.Overtheyears,I'vehadmany
opportunitiestoplaymyoriginalcompositionsonthestage,andthey've
alwaysfaredwellwitheventhemostdifficultofcritics.

Whatyou'rehearingisnotthefullscorefromtheoriginalconcerto,but
ascaleddownfirstmovement.Thepieceisactuallyoverhalfanhour
long,andiscomprisedoffourdistinctmovements.Iwill,timepermitting,
workonthistracksomemore,individualizingtheinstruments,andtrack
theentirescore.However,I'mexpectingthatworktotakewellovera
thousandhours,soenjoythismini-releaseofmyclassicalwork.

Itookinfluencesfromseveralknownartistsforthiswork.Theopening
stanzaisveryremnentofoneofBeethoven'sPianoConcerti,andthe
openingAllegrobrilliantethemeisderivedfromaChopinEtude.The
LentosectionhasitsthemefollowingthetraditionofGeorgeGershwin,
thoughitisultimatelyoriginal.TheAndantesostenutointheoriginal
workisalmostsevenminuteslongalone,anddrawsonsomeofthefiner
workofJ.S.Bach.TheAllegrosectionsareoriginal,thoughtheydolean
towardtheearlyworksofChopininspeedandchordprogression.Allof
themusic,ingeneral,isoriginal.

It'salmostimpossibletowritemusictodaythathasnotalreadybeen
presentedtotheworldinsomeformorfashion.Thebestwecanhopeto
doasmusiciansispresentanewtakeonatheme,butalwaysremember
whereitcamefrom.Withouttheinfluencesofthepast,musicwouldnot
beasweknowittoday.
